Understanding Sensory Processing in Autism & ADHD
A child walks into a classroom.
The teacher is speaking. A fan is running. Chairs are moving. Someone is tapping a pencil. Sunlight is coming through the window. Children are talking outside.
Most brains automatically push much of this information into the background so attention can stay on what matters.
But for some children, especially those with autism or ADHD, sensory information may be processed or filtered differently. What feels like harmless background input to one child can become distracting, uncomfortable, or overwhelming to another. Sensory differences are well recognized in autism, and research also shows that sensory-processing difficulties can occur alongside ADHD.
The Brain Is Constantly Filtering the World
Our eyes, ears, skin, nose, tongue, and body continuously send information to the brain.
The brain has to decide:
• What should I notice?
• What can I ignore?
• Is this sound important?
• Is this touch safe?
• Where should I direct my attention?
This filtering process helps us function without becoming overwhelmed by every sound, movement, light, smell, or sensation around us.
Sensory processing is not simply about detecting a stimulus. The brain must also organize and interpret that information before deciding how to respond.
What Happens When Filtering Becomes Difficult?
Imagine trying to listen to one person while five conversations are happening at the same volume.
That can help parents understand what sensory overload may feel like.
A child may notice:
• The teacher’s voice
• The fan
• Traffic outside
• Another child’s movements
• Fluorescent lighting
• Clothing touching the skin
all at the same time.
When too much information demands attention, the child may have less capacity available for learning, communication, emotional regulation, and social interaction.
Sometimes the behaviour we see outside is the brain struggling with too much sensory information inside.
Sensory Processing in Autism
Sensory differences are part of the clinical picture of autism. Autistic children may respond to sensory input in very different ways, including heightened sensitivity, reduced responsiveness, or sensory-seeking behaviour.
Parents may notice:
• Covering the ears around certain sounds
• Difficulty tolerating haircuts or clothing textures
• Strong reactions to lights, smells, or food textures
• Avoiding crowded environments
• Repeated jumping, spinning, or touching
• Seeking pressure or movement
• Becoming overwhelmed in busy places
These reactions should not automatically be interpreted as stubbornness or misbehaviour.
For some children, the environment itself may be difficult to process.
Sensory Processing in ADHD
ADHD is primarily characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
However, sensory-processing differences have also been reported in children with ADHD, including difficulties with sensory modulation and behavioural responses to sensory input.
For example, a child may appear unable to focus during class because their attention keeps being pulled toward:
• Movement nearby
• Background sounds
• Visual distractions
• Touch sensations
• Other competing sensory signals
What appears externally as poor concentration may, in some children, be worsened by an environment containing too much competing information.
Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing
A useful way to understand this is through two processes.
Bottom-up processing begins with information entering through the senses: sound, light, touch, smell, movement, and other signals.
Top-down processing involves the brain using attention, memory, expectations, and previous experience to decide what that information means and what deserves attention.
Healthy functioning depends on these systems working together.
Research continues to explore how sensory processing can influence higher cognitive functions such as attention and decision-making in neurodevelopmental conditions including autism and ADHD.
Why Sensory Overload Can Affect Behaviour
When sensory demands become too high, a child may become:
• Irritable
• Distracted
• Restless
• Withdrawn
• Anxious
• Emotionally overwhelmed
Some children may escape the environment. Others may cover their ears, cry, move continuously, or experience a meltdown.
The important question for parents is not only:
“Why is my child behaving this way?”
but also:
“What is my child’s brain trying to manage right now?”
That shift can completely change how we respond.
Sensory Processing Can Affect Learning and Communication
Attention is required before learning can happen.
If a large part of the child’s attention is being used to manage uncomfortable or competing sensory input, fewer cognitive resources may be available for:
• Listening
• Understanding instructions
• Language processing
• Classroom learning
• Social interaction
• Emotional regulation
Sensory over-responsivity, particularly to auditory and tactile input, can interfere with participation in academic and social situations.
This is why sensory regulation and learning should not always be considered separate issues.
What Parents Can Observe
Instead of only noting the behaviour, observe what happened immediately before it.
Ask:
• Does my child struggle more in noisy places?
• Are bright lights difficult?
• Do certain clothes or textures cause distress?
• Does the child constantly seek movement?
• Are mealtimes difficult because of textures?
• Does behaviour worsen when the child is tired or overstimulated?
• Is attention better in a quieter environment?
These patterns can provide useful information for the child’s clinical and developmental team.
Supporting the Child
There is no single sensory strategy that is right for every child.
Support should be individualized according to the child’s specific sensory profile and functional needs.
Depending on the child, care may involve environmental adjustments, predictable routines, developmental therapies, occupational therapy, sleep support, behavioural strategies, and broader individualized medical or developmental care. Sensory integration approaches are among the developmental strategies used to help some autistic individuals respond more effectively to sensory input.
The Most Important Message for Parents
Sensory differences do not mean that sensory problems cause autism or ADHD.
Autism is a developmental condition associated with differences in the brain, and its causes are complex and not fully understood.
Likewise, sensory symptoms alone do not diagnose ADHD.
But understanding a child’s sensory world can help parents and clinicians make better sense of attention, behaviour, emotional regulation, learning, and everyday functioning.
